Overview

Kajiken Ramen, nestled at 9 E 66th St in Minneapolis, offers an authentic taste of Japan in the heart of the city. This cozy restaurant strikes a balance between traditional flavors and a welcoming modern ambiance, making it a go-to spot for ramen enthusiasts and casual diners alike.

The main draw here is undoubtedly their ramen, with standout dishes like the Spicy Tonkotsu and the classic Tonkotsu Shoyu. The broth carries a genuine Japanese profile—rich and flavorful—though some diners note a lighter, less heavy stock that still preserves depth. Alongside ramen, the Original Abura Soba offers a unique, soupless noodle experience, appealing to those looking for variety beyond the classic soup bowls.

Kajiken also excels in appetizers that complement the main dishes. The Karaage, while tender and juicy, has drawn mixed reactions regarding seasoning and doneness, so it might be best to approach with caution. However, the Spicy Chili Edamame, Takoyaki, and the delicate Age Tofu are well-crafted choices that showcase the kitchen’s skill in balancing traditional ingredients with vibrant flavors.

The restaurant’s atmosphere enhances the dining experience. The decor invites guests into an intimate space that feels like a small slice of Japan, highlighted by attentive service and timely meals. It’s a place where you can savor your food without rush, yet enjoy efficient, friendly staffing.

Kajiken Ramen’s location makes it ideal for local residents and visitors to Midtown Minneapolis who seek authentic Japanese cuisine without the formality. It’s also conveniently connected to nearby establishments where diners can extend their evening with dessert or a matcha drink, adding a layer to the culinary journey.

While not claiming to be the city’s best ramen, Kajiken delivers consistency and charm, making it a worthy addition to Minneapolis’ vibrant noodle scene. Whether you’re after a hearty bowl of Spicy Tonkotsu or a simple, satisfying bite of Takoyaki, Kajiken Ramen offers a pleasing blend of flavor, space, and genuine Japanese dining culture.

We ordered Karaage chicken, spicy Tonkatsu and Sukiyaki. Tonkatsu was average, Sukiyaki was great, but the Karaage was the worst. I felt it was a bit undercooked, with almost no flavor. So if you avoid the Karaage, I think you will like the place. Not the best ramen in town, but not bad either.

Several reasons why I'm giving 5 stars: The restaurant's atmosphere is cozy and the decor is beautiful. The few and simple ingredients make the food delicious, the portions are generous, and the order was ready pretty quickly.

We’re lucky to have a lot of ramen spots around the city, and this one’s definitely one of my favorites. The service is always quick, and the food comes out fast. I also love that it’s connected to other restaurants, so after your meal you can grab dessert or a drink like matcha tea or coffee next door. It can get a bit busy on weekends, but the service and food are always great and consistent.

There were highlights and mediocre moments in terms of the food taste, but I do think that overall this is a very good neighborhood gem to grab a bite on a day that one needs relaxation, especially with a boba shop right next door. I have been here twice, both on impromptu occasions, and both times have confirmed my impression of this spot as a neighborhood gem like I had previously mentioned. Majority of the highlights are with the main dishes like the abura soba, the chicken curry, and the sukiyaki don. They contained sufficient ingredients and good seasoning, and had enough ingredients on the side on the table to add to the dishes. I personally added more chili oil into the abura soba. The sukiyaki don needed a bit more taste in the rice, but the beef was very flavorful. In terms of the small plates, most of them leaned towards mediocre, which meant that they tasted pretty standard, such as the karaage and the kaki fry. For those that crave for them specifically, I definitely think these dishes are worth getting. I just don't think one should get them if they're trying to go for a "best" or even the "better" dishes within the establishment. The only item I was more critical about was the agedashi tofu, which was very soggy and tasted too plain. It didn't seem like a lot of effort was put into it. With all that said, though, I will probably return here because it's very effective at resolving a craving and a quick bite. I am also happy about the fact that it's in Richfield because the community can benefit greatly from it.
